The Faugeres Appellation500 million years ago a slate bed (or schist) was formed. It is into this mineral- rich terrain that the vines grow and thrive with the grapes allegedly ripening at night from the heat from the sun stored in the rock. Red wines from Faugeres are generally round, balanced and full-bodied with tasting notes referring to blackcurrants, raspberries and vanilla. Until recently the region has been undervalued in terms of vintage wines but it is not standing still and is currently involved in a constantly evolving process in the hands of some talented and innovative wine makers. Many consider that Faugeres is the appellation that holds some of the greatest promise and potential of all the Languedocienne wines today. The town of Faugeres which gives it name to the appellation is 10 minutes away from Cabrerolles. Most producers have signs for wine tasting and there is usually no need to book ahead. This vineyard is in the village of Cabrerolles and interestingly was named after the pre-historic meteor crater that was identified in the 1950’s.
